NYC Cultural Organizations & Agencies With AIE Programs

More than 300 cultural organizations and agencies in New York City offer arts education programs in schools and at their institutions; many provide special programs and discounted tickets for children and families. For a list of cultural organizations that serve the New York City public schools and communities, visit the Alliance for the Arts web site. The United Federation of Teachers' Dial-a-Teacher offers a workshop that introduces the City's cultural institutions to parents. To schedule a workshop at your school, call (212) 598-9205.

Arts-in-Education Resources at the Library
Visit the New York Public Library Web site for general information, or access the local branches. The Todt Hill Branch maintains a Teachers' Collection devoted to improving teachers' skills. The collection includes hundreds of circulating books and professional journals with creative ideas for the classroom including: integrating literature across the curriculum, author study materials, school library activities, special education, Internet activities and more. The collection is also home to Field Trip and Program Files, a collection of information about local field trip destinations, cultural organizations, and performers who work with schools in the classroom. Lesson plans are a part of these reference files. Teachers are invited to utilize the library's online catalog service that allows you to search files and have books or publications delivered to a more convenient branch for pick-up. Staten Island on the Web includes local sources, books, cultural, and educational information. There is a picture collection of over 600,000 digital images.

Arts & Disabilities
Accessible Arts is a Kansas City-based agency that works with educators, caregivers, organizations and institutions such as museums and galleries to facilitate making arts accessible to and participatory for children and adults with disabilities.

Arts and Healing Network is an online resource for anyone interested in the healing power of art, especially those challenged by illness or trauma.

Hands On is a New York-based program dedicated to providing greater accessibility to the arts and cultural events for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

National Arts and Disability Center is a national clearinghouse for information, technical assistance and referrals in the field of arts and disability.

Survivors Art Foundation is an agency dedicated to mainstreaming trauma survivors with physical and mental disabilities into the arts through a range of outlets.

VSA Arts Connection creates opportunities through the arts for people with disabilities, implemented through a network of local, state, and national organizations that include art agencies and cultural institutions.

National Arts-in-Education Organizations
Americans for the Arts is the nation’s leading non-profit dedicated to the advancement of arts in America. It is a leading source of funding resources, arts education and community development, provides direct access to many related links.

Arts Education Partnership is a national coalition of arts, education, business, philanthropic, and government organizations dedicated to promoting the essential role of arts in learning, advocacy, and funding.

National Assembly of State Arts Agencies is a clearinghouse for information and resources supporting arts education. It also offers a broad list of links to research, organized by topic and arts disciplines.

National Endowment for the Arts' vision is to achieve a nation in which artistic excellence is celebrated, supported, and available to all, by advancing learning in the arts, celebrating our cultural heritage, and strengthening the arts in communities throughout the country. The NEA provides access to arts education publications and related links.

President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities identifies issues and develops initiatives in the arts and humanities. “Gaining the Arts Advantage - Lessons for School Districts that Value Arts Education,” a report of the literacy and competence in the arts as one of the fundamental purposes of schooling for all children, includes case studies of successful arts programs in school districts.

New York State Arts-in-Education Organizations
NYS Alliance for Arts Education is a statewide non-profit dedicated to ensuring the arts become an integral part of every young person’s education. It creates networks, partnership and professional development opportunities.

NYS Council on the Arts (NYSCA) is a State funding agency that supports activities of non-profit organizations in NYS to bring artistic programs of high quality to the State’s citizens. NYSCA provides direct access to many related links.

NYS Office of Cultural Education is a repository of information for the NYS Library, Museum, Archives and Public Broadcasting Offices. It supports research, operates programs, and develops collections that serve these institutions and the residents of NYS.

Partners for Arts Education administers a Technical Assistance Program (TAP) and hosts the annual statewide conference, Common Ground, for arts education practitioners.

American Alliance for Theatre and Education promotes standards in theatre and theatre education by disseminating best practices and providing opportunities for its membership to learn, expand, exchange and diversify their work.

Association of Teaching Artists, a not-for-profit advocacy organization, brings together a community of professional teaching artists throughout NYS to promote discussion and share information and resources.

National Art Education Association is an organization for everyone concerned about quality art education in our schools.

National Dance Education Organization promotes standards of excellence in dance education. To that end, organization hosts public discussions, workshops, sponsors institutes, conferences and a wide range of programs.

NYS Art Teachers Association advances the cause of visual art education at home, in school and in the community.

NYS School Music Association advocates improving education in music of all people in New York by promoting appropriate music activities and programs in the schools and communities of NYS.

Teachers & Writers Collaborative brings writers and educators together to explore the connections between writing and reading literature.
