2011 COAHSI Grants

Premier Grants
Premier Grants support first-time grantees — both individual Staten Island artists and community arts and cultural organizations — that present art and cultural programming through projects and public presentations. The grant is funded through the Greater New York Arts Development Fund (GNYADF) of New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA).

*All first time applicants must attend a workshop before applying. See the workshop schedule here.

Funding Criteria: a) artistic merit and cultural significance; b) clearly stated objectives; c) clear and realistic plan for implementation; d) appropriate request level and realistic budget for stated proposal; e) need and impact on the artistic discipline, geographic area, or local population: projects which address communities or artistic disciplines which are underserved will receive foremost attention; f) demonstrated community interest or support of project; and g) applicant's artistic experience, skill, and exhibition/performance history. Funding priorities: artist fees, marketing and publicity expenses, direct administrative expenses, supplies and materials.

What is not eligible: a) organizations receiving direct or discretionary funds from the Department of Cultural Affairs in the 2011 fiscal year; b) organizations with operating income budgets over $100,000 for two of the last three fiscal years; c) programs that are essentially religious, recreational, rehabilitative, or therapeutic; d) universities, colleges, primary and secondary schools and districts, school affiliates or components, in-school activities or programs/activities that exclusively serve a student audience with no public component; e) programs serving only the applicant organization's members; f) operating expenses of privately-owned facilities (homes and studios); and g) deficit budgets, capital improvements, equipment purchases, fundraising events, scholarships, juror fees, prizes, lobbying expenses, entertainment, reception or food expenses, any non-arts related expenses or administrative costs unrelated to project.

Art Fund Grant
Previously funded COAHSI Premier artists and arts organization awardees may apply for funding for community projects in any arts or humanities discipline. No conduit or 501(c) 3 required. Requests range from $750 - 5000.

Funding Criteria: a) artistic merit and cultural significance; b) clearly stated objectives; c) clear and realistic plan for implementation; d) appropriate request level and realistic budget for stated proposal; e) need and impact on the artistic discipline, geographic area, or local population: projects which address communities or artistic disciplines which are underserved will receive foremost attention; f) demonstrated community interest or support of project; and g) applicant's artistic experience, skill, and exhibition/performance history. Funding priorities: artist fees, marketing and publicity expenses, direct administrative expenses, supplies and materials.

Encore Grant
The Encore Grant is for individual artists and nonprofit organizations that present programming of artistic and cultural signifigance in any artistic/cultural discipline, including crafts and folk arts, will be considered. Applicants must have a 501 (c) 3 or conduit. These grants are not for fellowships, subsidies, or entitlements. Projects must be open to the public and take place on Staten Island during the year 2011. Requests range from $500 - $5000.

Funding Criteria: a) artistic merit and cultural significance; b) clearly stated objectives; c) clear and realistic plan for implementation; d) appropriate request level and realistic budget for stated proposal; e) need and impact on the artistic discipline, geographic area, or local population: projects which address communities or artistic disciplines which are underserved will receive foremost attention; f) demonstrated community interest or support of project; and g) applicant's artistic experience, skill, and exhibition/performance history. Funding priorities: artist fees, marketing and publicity expenses, direct administrative expenses, supplies and materials.

What is not eligible: a) organizations seeking funds directly from NYSCA in the 2011 fiscal year regardless of their application's status; b) organizations with operating income budgets over $300,000 for two of the last three fiscal years; c) programs that are essentially religious, recreational, rehabilitative, or therapeutic; d) universities, colleges, primary and secondary schools and districts, school affiliates or components, in-school activities or programs/activities that exclusively serve a student audience with no public component; e) past grant recipients who have not filed their final reports; f) programs serving only the applicant organization's members; g) operating expenses of privately-owned facilities; h) deficit budgets, capital improvements, equipment purchases, fundraising events, scholarships, juror fees, prizes, lobbying expenses, entertainment, reception or food expenses; and i) applicants or conduits who cannot present a valid tax-exempt Federal ID number.

Original Work Grant
Original Work Grants support individual Staten Island artists of all disciplines for the creation of new work that breaks new ground and addresses the concept of community. The grant is funded through the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

To be eligible for the 2011 NYSCA Original Work grant, the applicant must meet ALL the following criteria: a) applicant must not have received an Original Work grant since 2005; b) applicant must live in Staten Island; c) applicant must be at least 18 years old; d) applicant must not be a full-time student at the time of the application or grant period; and e) applicant must be in good standing for any grants previously received from COAHSI.
Funding Criteria: a) artistic excellence and cultural significance; b) community-based content, subject matter, or process; c) artist has clear and realistic goals; d) artist's experience in regard to the proposal; e) exhibition, program, or cultural activity must be accessible to the public and take place between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011.

*If applying to the DCA Art Fund or NYSCA Encore grant, please note that all applications require the new budget to be completed. PLEASE DO NOT RE-FORMAT THE SPREADSHEET, AS IT IS ALREADY FORMATTED TO ADD YOUR BUDGET FOR YOU.  ALSO NOTE THAT THERE ARE THREE TABS THAT WILL HAVE TO BE FILLED OUT: BUDGET, IN-KIND GIFTS, AND PARTICIPATION.  Incomplete applications will be returned to the applicants. JPMorgan Chase Capacity Building Grants
Staten Island-based, non-profit organizations who do arts programing are eligible to apply for JPMorgan Chase funds up to $3,000.

What will be funded:

  1. Arts and culture nonprofits may apply for general operating support, funds for equipment purchases, marketing, or projects which will increase their capacity to engage new communities and increase their outreach

  2. Nonprofits with primary missions other than arts and cultural programming may apply for arts-related administrative costs, funds for arts-related equipment purchases, or for projects which will increase the capacity to provide art services with outreach to the community

What is not eligible:

    • Public or private schools, colleges, or universities

    • Federal, city, or state agencies

    • Programs which are essentially recreational, rehabilitative, therapeutic or religious

    • Organizations which serve only their members

    • Endowments, scholarships, awards or prizes

    JPMorgan Chase Arts in Our Communities Grant
    The JPMorgan Chase Arts in Our Communities Grant supports artists and craftspeople as they create work about the immigrant/refugee experience, or that continues their native cultural traditions on Staten Island. This grant finds a platform for artists and craftspeople to share their work with the wider community and involves the community in the creative process.

    This grant provides money to artists and craftspeople of all disciplines including musicians, folk artists, writers, performers, filmmakers, dancers, or visual artists.  The grant must culminate in a public display or performance of the artist's or craftperson's work. As part of the grant, the Council on the Arts and Humanities for Staten Island will assist in finding a venue and marketing the public display or performance.

    1. Applicant must not have received an Arts in Our Communities grant in 2009
    2. Applicant must live in Staten Island
    3. Applicant must be at least 18 years old
    4. Applicant must not be a full-time student at the time of the application or grant period
    5. Both individuals and groups (such as dance groups, bands, and visual arts collaborators) may apply
    6. Projects must take place in Staten Island
    7. Applicant must be in good standing for any grants previously received from COAHSI.
