The Actors Workshop The Actors Workshop is celebrating its sixteenth year as a performing arts school. The first studio, housed at St. Charles Mission Center, began as a program to instruct Staten Island's young actors in acting, singing, and dance. Through the years, it has developed into a triple threat school which trains the young actor for the Broadway stage. We offer classes for ages 2 through adult in drama, dance, and voice. African Violet Society of Staten Island TAVSSI is an official African Violet Society in Staten Island and a member of TriState. The purpose of TAVSSI is to share information and knowledge concerning the culture, showing, propagation, grooming, and buying of African violets. Membership is always open. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month from September through June. Alice Austen House Museum Advances public understanding of the life and work of Alice Austen. Austen is significant as a self-taught woman photographer and as an amateur landscape designer. Austen's art making and life is revealed through a series of exhibitions, school-based education programs, general public education programs, artist commissioned projects, and research on a year round basis. The Museum operates and interprets the Austen family home, "Clear Comfort," located within a NYC Park on the NY Harbor Narrows with a stunning panoramic view of the greater NY Metropolitan region. American Institute of Architects Staten Island Chapter The AIA is dedicated to serving its members, advancing their value, and improving the quality of the built environment. The organization was founded in 1857. The American Institute of Architects, a nationwide association, represents nearly 70,000 licensed professionals through its office in Washington, DC and through over 300 state and local components. Founded in 1931, the New York State Association of Architects, also known as AIA New York State, has a statewide membership of over 4,500 members in twelve chapters and speaks for the interests of all registered architects in New York State. The Executive Office is headquartered in Albany. AIA members adhere to a Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct that assures clients, the public and colleagues of their dedication to high standards in professional practice. The Staten Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects was founded in 1950 by a group of architects that included Mr. Albert Melniker, AIA, who remained a member until his passing in January 2002. Archaeology Society of Staten Island A chartered, non-profit organization of people interested in (or who wish to find out about) archaeology (world wide). Nine lectures by world-known archaeologists plus weekend trips, museum tours, workshops and overseas tours. Meetings are held monthly on Sunday afternoons from September to May. One-day trial memberships are available. No experience necessary. Art Lab, Inc. This art school at Snug Harbor offers classes and workshops in the fine and applied arts to students of all ages, beginners and professionals. Art camps, scholarship and school programs available. Two galleries display work by emerging and professional artists in month-long exhibitions. Artists Federation An organization comprised of established artists as well as new and emerging artists. Provides venues for artists to exhibit their work. Blue Heron Nature Center Blue Heron Nature Center offers a wide variety of natural and cultural activities for people of all ages. If you would like to become involved with the Center, please contact the Outreach Coordinator at 718-390-8016. Calvary Presbyterian Church Stained Glass Windows Calvary Presbyterian Church offers tours of American-style stained glass windows by D.M. Armstrong on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00AM to 2:00PM or by appointment. Castleton Hill Moravian Labyrinth Labyrinth patterns have been in use for over 2,000 years. Since the medieval period, they have been used for walking meditations. Walking the labyrinth is a way to reduce stress and to find focus and peace. A Labyrinth Walk will include a brief introduction to the Labyrinth and its history. Participants will have the opportunity to walk the Labyrinth and, as they feel comfortable, to reflect together on their experiences. Clay Pit Pond State Park Preserve Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve is a 260-acre natural area near the southwest shore of SI. Once the site of a clay-mining operation, the Park Preserve today contains a mixture of unique habitats such as wetlands, fields, sandy barrens, spring-fed streams and woodlands. As a terminal point for some northern and southern plant species, the area is rich with a variety of plant and animal life. A sampling of plants and animals found in the Park include pitch pine, lizard's tail, raccoon, screech owl, box turtle, fence lizard and eastern towhee. Clay Pit has both hiking and equestrial trails and offers excellent bird watching opportunities. Seasonal calendar is available. Both on-site and in-school programs are also available with advance registration. Open every day but Sunday from 9-5 pm. Free admission. Collaborative Projects, Inc. This artists' group was known as Colab when it began in 1978. The larger active group dissolved in the late 1980s, but the video distribution project called MWF Video Club has continued. We are now in a phase of inventorying and archiving. Occasional public events. Columcille Irish Cultural Center The Columcille Irish Cultural Center provides a public facility and forum to increase the knowledge and awareness of the history and accomplishments of the Irish and Irish-American peoples. We have several hundred books, recordings, numerous artifacts and memorabilia pertaining to the history of the Irish and Irish-American peoples. We provide the annual Staten Island Irish Festival held in South Beach. We provide an Irish Honor Guard, available upon request at no cost, to the community for ceremonial functions such as the Staten Island St. Patrick parade, public ceremonies, funerals and other affairs. Call the Center for additional information or to schedule a visit. Conference House Association Maintains the historic Billopp House Museum, site of a 1776 Peace Conference. Guided tours April through December. Classes, concerts, special events, children and adult workshops. School groups by appointment. Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island Promotes arts and cultural activities by providing technical services to the community through programs such as the COAHSI newsletter, grant programs, seminars and workshops. COAHSI serves a borough-wide constituency of artists, cultural organizations and the general public. Crayonblu Children's birthday parties on and off site. "Art Smart" program developed for schools provide arts-in-education curriculum. Call or email for more information. Wednesday art classes; private lessons for children 3 and older. CSI Center for the Arts With five theaters under one roof, the CSI Center for the Arts features over 750 performances and events annually by local and national artists as diverse as Bobby Vinton, Kevin James, Joan Baez, Crystal Gayle, and Richard Lewis. CTV - Staten Island Community Television CTV, a not-for-profit organization funded through a franchise agreement with Time Warner Cable, is the Public Access television facility for the residents of SI. We provide training and equipment to enable Staten Islanders to produce their own television programs which are cablecast on channels 34 and 35. Our facility has a large studio and five edit suites for inhouse production and portable equipment available for off site productions. We also operate the Community Art Gallery which features the work of local artists and photographers. Danzaisa Performance & Film DanzAisa = danza (dance in Spanish) + Aisa (Mother Earth, she who unites through music & dance). DanzAisa fuses cultures and disciplines into cutting edge performance and film works. Day de Dada Performance Art Festival Day de DaDa is a performance art group based in Staten Island. We promote spontaneous and experiemental performance art with audience participation. Email to for more information; check the website for performance schedule. Downtown Staten Island Council The Downtown Staten Island Council is a non-profit organization, is dedicated to continued community development and commercial revitalization of the Downtown Business District and surrounding neighborhoods in St. George, Tompkinsville, Stapleton, Clifton, Rosebank, and Fort Wadsworth. To contact our office call or e-mail. Enrichment Through The Arts Stimulates children's appreciation for the arts and enhances the educational process through exposure to live professional theater. Everything Goes Book Cafe and Neighborhood Stage Every Thing Goes Book Cafe and Neighborhood Stage has an ongoing event calendar which features a diverse array of FREE cultural events and entertainment. They have several gallery-wall areas featuring local visual artists. Writers and illustrators are invited to participate in their quarterly "assembling magazine" project. Many opportunities to share creativity and to meet each other are offered on their regular events calendar. ETG's cultural projects are open to local and visiting artists, performers, writers and filmmakers. Share your creativity at ETG by contacting the managers and auditioning your work. ETG Book Cafe and Neighborhood Stage is the biggest seller of Used Books and Records on the big island of Staten, with internet, wi-fi, and organic coffee and teas. It is a member of the Every Thing Goes family of recycle/reuse/reduce-our-ecological-footprint stores that have been part of the downtown Staten Island landscape for over 20 years, including ETG Clothing and ETG Furniture. Film Society of Staten Island The Film Society presents a variety of renowned domestic and foreign films and shorts, followed by guest speakers, discussion and refreshments, during its annual Spring series. The Fine Arts Print Group To further the art of monotype for the public, this group formed in April 2001 and was formerly known as the Cromwell Print Group. Classes in monotyping and dry point are held at New Lane every Friday under the direction of Dorothy Ferrara. Call to join a free class (a small donation will be taken for supplies). Four Bridges Stitchers Chapter of American Needlepoint Guild, Inc. We do all types of needlepoint --counted work cross stitch, tent stitch on canvas or even weave fabric, blackwork, hardanger, crewelpoint, raised work, bargello, and pulled work. Friends of Westerleigh Park The Friends Group is committed to the beautification and preservation of our historic park. There are ongoing programs throughout the year. The group meets in the park every Saturday morning at 9AM. Garibaldi-Meucci Museum This small museum was once home to Antonio Meucci, the true inventor of the
telephone. The one-time solace of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian war hero,
the charming gothic-revival style house now hosts Italian language classes
for adults, and school programs. The gallery also has changing art exhibitions. Outdoor summer concerts are a draw, as well as lectures and other special programs. We collect and exhibit period furnishings, documents, historic telephone models and furniture made by Meucci himself as well as artifacts belonging to Garibaldi. Guided
tours daily. Open Tues.- Sun. 1 to 5 pm. General admission $5. The Gateway Camera Club of Staten Island Photography enthusiasts learning, sharing photo ideas and techniques. Local photographers learning to further their photographic skills. Dues are $35 per year. Everyone is welcome to join…just come to any meeting as our guest and to see if you'd like to join. Gateway National Recreation Area Fort Wadsworth (354-4500) -one of the oldest military installations in the US. Guided tours, walking trail, incredible Manhattan and harbor vistas, and visitor's center with exhibits. Greenbelt Conservancy Explore the Greenbelt's 30-plus miles of foot trails and over 2800 acres of meadows, forests, parks and recreational areas in the heart of Staten Island. Visitors can enjoy golfing, catch-and-release fishing, birding, quiet walks or hikes, archery, environmental education programs, summertime concerts, special events and much more. The Greenbelt's core has remained natural and undeveloped providing habitats for wildlife and native plants. A new Greenbelt Nature Center, scheduled to open in mid-2002, is under construction at Brielle and Rockland Avenues. The park is open from dawn to dusk every day; some parking area hours differ. Call to request an informational brochure with trail map and directions. GKProductions A group dedicated to the presentation of musical revues (some original) and/or full-scale musical productions. Call for information about getting involved. Greenbelt Environmental Education Center The Greenbelt Environmental Education Center has a renowned history of providing Staten Island and metropolitan-area visitors with unique opportunities to explore and learn from nature. We offer interdisciplinary programs, composed of nature-inspired lessons and activities that engage people of all ages and abilities. Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art In 1947, Mrs. Jacques Marchais (nee Edna Coblenz), a dealer in Asian art, founded a museum to house her personal collection of Tibetan art. Located on Lighthouse Hill, the Museum is a complex of two fieldstone buildings designed to resemble a small Himalayan monastery. The collection consists of Tibetan art from Tibet, Nepal, India, Mongolia, and Northern China dating from the 15th to the early 20th century. The collection is especially rich in statues of buddhas, lamas, arhats, protector deities, thangka paintings, and excellent examples of 18th century Qianlong cloisonné. The Museum is surrounded by meditation gardens with statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Tibetan prayer flags, and a koi fish and lotus pond. JCC of SI, Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute The Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute is a non-profit, non-sectarian community music school that provides high quality instruction at affordable rates. Programs include private lessons in piano, guitar, voice, strings, wind and brass instruments, theory and ensemble opportunities, early childhood music classes and parent/child music classes. The facility is comosed of professional musicians with extensive teaching and performing experience. Julia Music Performing Arts School The Julia Music Performing Arts School facility is a newly constructed, 5000 square foot building centrally located in Staten Island, NY. A comfortable atmosphere features the Brian Rehr Dance/Performance Room - a 1200 square foot studio which hosts dance classes, theater workshops, early childhood music development classes and various music ensembles. Recitals and performances are held throughout the year, as well as monthly exhibits by our own Staten Island artists. Julia Music houses six spacious studios designed for private instruction in voice and on any instrument. Also notable are the Grand Piano Suite, Drum Room and a state-of-the-art Digital Production/Recording Studio. Private parking and security.
Kids on Stage Afterschool (for ages 7-17) and summer programs (for ages 9-17) in music and dramatic arts with performance opportunities. No experience necessary - just a desire to learn about music and theater. A short audition is required. Registration conducted three times a year. No charge for afterschool programs, nominal fee for the summer. Loris Bend Foundation, Inc. A community-oriented music organization that sponsors original, creative work, concerts, festivals and media releases. Lynne Robbins Steinman Foundation Undertakes a variety of garden and beautification projects throughout the borough. Mighty String Demons An ensemble of young violinists under the direction of Sanchie Bobrow. They have performed at various cultural institutions on Staten Island and throughout New York City. They have been featured on NY1 News, NBC News, and the Variety Children's Charity Telethon with "Cousin" Bruce Morrow. Moonlight Quilters Moonlight Quilters of Staten Island Guild is a group of people who enjoy creating quilting projects either by hand, machine or both. We meet twice monthly, on the second and third Fridays. Meetings on the second Friday are casual quilting get-togethers as well as quilting classes. Meetings on the third Friday include programs and business as well as quilting. Meetings begin at 7:30 PM and are held at the Carmel Richmond Nursing Home, located at 88 Old Town Road in Dongan Hills. Classes for beginning quilters are available for both adults and children. Moravian Cemetery The Moravian Cemetery was started in 1740 and is considered one of NYC's most beautiful cemeteries. Situated on 114 acres, it has two fresh-water lakes, winding pathways and roadways. The springtime display of azaleas, rhododendron, mountain laurel and cherry trees is the largest and most beautiful collections on all of Staten Island. The fall foliage is a canvas of earth-tone colors that rivals any of the New England states. When you describe the gravestones, statues and mausoleums, you almost have to use every word known in the language of architecture. Many consider the cemetery an outdoor museum. The first Moravian Church built on Staten Island was built in 1763 at New Dorp (adjacent to the cemetery). The present church was built in 1845; its architect was Jasper Cropsey who later became a prominent landscape painter.
The Moravian Cemetery offers walking tours and special events on its historic grounds. Genealogical inquiries are welcome. Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble, Inc. Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble, Inc. (MCCE) is a newly formed non-profit organization. MCCE is a consortium of high-caliber musicians with a new vision of classical music. Not to be compared with traditional groups, MCCE is that raw combination of youth, talent, and fervor that is one step out of the traditional classical music box. With wide-ranging presentations of both classical and contemporary chamber music, combined with consummate artistry, we believe in serving two goals - entertaining our audiences and exposing them to the valuable literature that is seldom heard elsewhere. Recognized for many outstanding achievements individually, these performers collectively represent the next generation of emerging artists in the classical arena. MCCE is a non-profit organization that offers a concert series, a composer-in-residence position, children's concerts with original stories and educational activities. Music at St. Alban's Music at Saint Alban's, a community outreach of historic Saint Alban's Episcopal Church in Eltingville, Staten Island, brings affordable high-caliber performances of classical music by outstanding international artists to Staten Island's South Shore. Music at Saint Alban's is supported by ticket sales; by donations from Saint Alban's parishioners, friends in the larger community, local businesses and community organizations; and by generous in-kind contributions from the artists themselves. Music Together of Staten Island Early childhood music, movement & instrument play. For infants & toddlers (birth to 5 years) with parents/caregivers. Twenty classes to choose from. Weekly classes meet year-round at Snug Harbor Cultural Center since 1995. Nanette Bearden Contemporary Dance Theater The Nanette Bearden Contemporary Dance Theatre is a not for profit arts organization working on Staten Island to provide an outlet for emerging dance/theater artists and offering quality performance and teaching experiences for a diverse and often underserved audience. National Lighthouse Museum A 10-acre museum devoted to maritime history situated on the picturesque waterfront with spectacular Manhattan and harbor views. Adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry. To volunteer, call the office. NeverLand Theatre Company Committed to entertaining and educating a diverse audience, and fostering the talents of those working on-stage and behind the scenes. Resident theatrical production company at the Williamson Theater, CSI Center for the Arts. New Direction Services, Inc. A non-profit organization focusing on literacy promotion and book distribution to children, cultural awareness and cross-cultural communication, and nutrition education & food pantry for the elderly. Volunteers are always welcome. New York Institute of Anthropology An archeological research agency engaged in rescue/preservation of 12,000 years of cultural heritage evidence on SI. Educational traveling exhibits available. Major programs established at Clay Pit Pond State Park, SI, and Bayside Historical, Fort Totten, in Queens (718-967-1976 & 718-352-1548). Publish field reports to members. Participation in group requires membership with NYIA which encourages active participation in rescue of cultural heritage. Student internship credits available. Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (NCCA) is set in the historically significant Snug Harbor Cultural Center (SHCC)-83 acres of parkland, 28
buildings preserved for the visual and performing arts-located on Staten
Island in a largely residential community that is separated from and yet
connected to the Metropolitan area by the New York Harbor. The Newhouse
Center employs this unique environment to create modern and contemporary
art programs for the growth and development of artists and the public while
serving both local and regional constituencies. Noble Maritime Collection The Noble Maritime Collection is a maritime museum and study center. The museum features the work or distinguished maritime artist, John A. Noble, the history of Sailor's Snug Harbor, and the working waterfront of New York's harbor. Special exhibitions, with an emphasis on printmaking, are scheduled throughout the year. The facility includes galleries, classrooms, print studios, library, archives, and museum shop. The library, archives, and Stone Studio are available to scholars and artists by special request. Call the museum for information on becoming a member or joining the Noble Crew. Nylon Wound, Inc. Nylon Wound was created to provide and promote the classical guitar in various settings and venues for public enrichment. In 2005 they established the Neighborhood Concert Series bringing free classical guitar performances to local neighborhood venues throughout NYC including four free concerts on SI. In 2006 they initiated the Performance Outreach and Partnership Outreach programs to provide performance opportunities for student instrumentalists and services to educational institutions to complement their educational, performance and cultural activities. In line with their mission, they have created and recorded new arrangements and compositions for the classical guitar. In collaboration with Musicians On Call Inc., they perform in hospitals and nursing homes throughout NYC including the Village Nursing Home, St Luke's Hospital and Rivington House. Preservation League of Staten Island Identifies and fosters and appreciation for supporting the preservation of SI's historic building environment through a wide variety of activities. Sponsors an annual house tour of historic homes and publishes a member newsletter. Pro Musica Corp. Pro Musica is a not-for-profit corporation. Pro Musica organizes cultural and educational concerts in different areas of Staten Island. The concerts are scheduled in parks, schools, hospitals, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, churches, synagogues, and different other public venues. Must be a professional musician (at least a MM degree). Protectors of Pine Oaks Woods Protectors is Staten Island's largest environmental organization with over 2,500 members. We identify natural areas that need preservation and parklands that need protection. Our main concerns are forests and wetlands. We head tours and hikes of SI natural areas including our 10-mile SI Greenbelt Hike. We have court actions against NYC and NYS agencies for not properly protecting the public lands. We sell the book "Secret Places of Staten Island" that gives dozens of walks the public is free to take. We are in large part responsible for the creation of the SI Greenbelt, Blue Heron Park, Mt. Loretto Conservation Area, Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve, and many others. Our symbol is a green Staten Island. Richmond Choral Society Dedicated to the study, interpretation, and performance of classical and contemporary choral works for the purpose of sharing this repertoire with the public at large and expanding its understanding and participation in this tradition. New singing members are always welcome. Supporting members are also needed. Richmond County Orchestra Staten Island's premiere professional home-grown symphony orchestra (65-85 members strong) The Richmond County Orchestra has served greater SI for over 7 years with 10-20 performances per season! This includes its annual great performance series, the Maestro Speaks series and Classic's for Kids' series, all open to the public at modest admission and FREE for Children. Under Maestro Alan Aurelia the orchestra has gained national attention and has been able to attract world class musicians, soloists, celebrities, and combine them with local musicians, singers, composers, visual artists, poets and dancers creating diverse, dynamic multi-media concert events. RCO's Student Mentoring programs and extensive music in education outreach programs "bringing classics to the kids & kids to the classics" have helped launch many students music careers. RCO's huge diversity in its musicians age and ethnic makeup helps create and generate equally diverse programming for our SI community. "To entertain and to educate" is the RCO motto. RCO awards a prize and a nationally televised public concert with the orchestra to the winner of it's annual music competition. The RCO has produced two CDs on SI. RCO performs in a large variety of venues. Including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cotton Club, The Jewish Heritage Museum, the Music Hall at Snug Harbor, St John's University, St George Theatre, St Peters Church, The Conference House, Wagner College and CSI. RCO offices are located in Snug Harbor Cultural Center. Richmond County Pipes & Drums, Inc. Richmond County Pipes & Drums, Inc. is a small, family orientated bagpipe & drum band based in Staten Island. We have a successful history of tradition and excellence in the Staten Island community since 1976. RCPD is always looking for new members to join us. The band offers FREE piping and drumming lessons to students of all ages. Beginners are always welcome. All we ask is that you like to have fun and participate in community activities especially the month of March but also other times of the year. We participate in events in all over Staten Island and the NYC - Metro area. Practice is held every Thursday night at 7pm at St Albans Episcopal Church in the Eltingville section of Staten Island. The band is also available for booking your special event. We offer an array of talent: From solo pipers & drummers to a full pipe band. Please contact us to discuss. Richmond Roundsingers Richmond Roundsingers meets once a month to sing rounds. No experience or audition is necessary. This is a very informal group that sings for enjoyment. They usually meet the 4th Tuesday of the month, but call to confirm. The group enjoys creating harmony using this old music form. Call for more information. Richmond Theatre Collection Presents quality musicals, operettas, revues, and operas twice a year including their annual holiday show. The RTC Kids, ages 5-17, perform with the company at many SI events. The Riverside Ensemble The Riverside Ensemble is a Staten Island based group of musicians whose objective is to add a touch of elegance to your Wedding Ceremony or Reception, Party, Dinner, Cocktail Hour, Bar & Bat Mitzvah, or Corporate Affair. Our groups include but are not limited to Violin & Cello Duets, Flute Trio (Flute, Violin, & Cello), String Trio (Two Violins & Cello), Flute Quartet (Flute, Violin, Viola & Cello), String Quartet (Two Violins, Viola & Cello), Strolling Violinists, Singers, Pianists, Trumpeters, Harpists. Celebrating Ten years as Staten Island's own professional opera company, the Riverside Opera Company produces several staged-costumed with live full orchestra productions for the greater SI public at low admission Kids are FREE and welcome! Performance venues include the Willowby Theatre, New 42nd St Theatre, St Joseph's Greenwich Village, Music Hall @ Snug Harbor, St. George Theatre, St. John's University, Wagner College, CSI, Conference House, Alice Austen House and in many schools both public & private, nursing homes, and community centers. ROC offers the Singers Institute throughout the year for professional and emerging professional singers to fine-hone their audition skills. ROC also provides local students & volunteers opportunities to work behind the scenes as assistant stage directors, managers as well as fundraisers. Because Opera utilizes the visual, literary and all the performing arts (music, drama, dance) it employs several local stage directors, costumers, visual artists, as well as orchestral musicians, singers, and dancers.
St. George Theatre/Richmond Dance Ensemble, Inc. The Richmond Dance Ensemble owns and operates the St. George Theatre (SGT). Dedicated through a 1978 land trust, to preserving the natural landscape on Grymes Hill, which boasts a rare serpentine rock formation, for the public's use. Snug Harbor Cultural Center Snug Harbor Cultural Center, an official Smithsonian Affiliate since December 2005, is a multi-use center for culture and the arts located on the North Shore of Staten Island, just a short distance from the St. George Ferry Terminal of the Staten Island Ferry. More than 400,000 people from all over the world visit the site annually. Originally founded in 1801 as a home for retired sailors, Snug Harbor plays host to 83 lush acres of rolling hills and meadows, the Staten Island Botanical Garden, the New York Chinese Scholar's Garden, the Staten Island Children's Museum, the Noble Maritime Collection, and the future home of the Staten Island Museum. The entire site is designated a National Historic Landmark because of its highly significant place in the nation's maritime, charitable, planning landscape design and architectural history. 19th Century Greek Gothic Revival buildings built between 1831 and 1920 overlook New York Harbor and are as remarkable for their beauty as they are for their historical significance. The Music Hall built in 1892 is the second oldest concert hall in New York City to Carnegie Hall…and is the setting for the Harbor's Performing Arts musical theater productions. Outdoor concerts and other cultural events during warm weather months attract thousands of visitors and artists to the campus as well as art organizations which include the Art Lab for students of all ages. South Shore Artists Group We are a group of artists that meets every Tuesday from September through June to enjoy painting together and share our ideas about the various media in which we work. We often have guest artists give us a demo, but we do not give lessons. We co-sponsor the Annual Art show at the Conference House (the first Sunday in June), which is open to all artists. As a group and individually we have various exhibits throughout the year. Membership is limited to 40 and is currently full. Active members of the group will offer membership to interested parties when there is an opening. South Shore Band A community band which performs at local events. Staten Island Artists Association The Staten Island Artists' Association was founded in 1989 to encourage mature adults, 50 years of age and older, to pursue artistic endeavors. The Staten Island Artists' Association provides its members with the opportunity to meet and network with other artists, expand their knowledge of art and culture, and share their work with others through exhibition and sale. Staten Island Ballet Theater Presents professional dance and musical productions, and provides professional dance training in a non-commercial environment, including free dance training to talented and deserving youths. Staten Island Borough Historian Acts as a public resource for Staten Island historical research, referring people to various sources for information, photographs, maps, articles, etc. Available to speak to civic and cultural organizations on SI history. Staten Island Botanical Garden Twenty-one gardens on 83 acres including the unique New York Chinese Scholar's Garden, the Connie Gretz's Secret Garden, the Carl Grillo Glass House, and the White Garden. Enhances the community's appreciation of nature through exhibits, displays, special events, trips and educational programs. Staten Island Camera Club (formerly known as Color Photographers Club of Staten Island) A member group of interested photographers who participate in the educational interests of the community. Holds competitions, workshops and field trips. Encourages individual participation in slides, color, black and white, and digital prints. Staten Island Chamber Music Players, Inc. The SI Chamber Music Players includes four performing units: brass and woodwind quintets, and string and jazz quartets. Four subscription concerts take place each year in Veterans Memorial Hall at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, and four free summer concerts are presented at High Rock Park Conservation Center. In addition, The Chamber Players perform demonstration concerts in SI public schools, a monthly series at SI University Hospital, performances in nursing homes and at civic events. Staten Island Historical Society/Historic Richmond Town Historic 100-acre village representing 300 years of Staten Island life. In season, costumed interpreters and craftspeople re-enact daily life in the 1820's and the 1860's. Staten Island Museum SIIAS is one of NY's oldest and most culturally diverse organizations. Founded in 1881, SIIAS reflects the diverse interests of the founders ranging from natural science to archaeology to local history and art. Staten Island Philharmonic Orchestra The Staten Island Philharmonic Orchestra exists to enrich the cultural life of the community by offering high-quality professional performances of classical music, to build audiences for classical music on Staten Island, and to educate the next generation of classical musicians and audience members. Staten Island Poetry Society The SIPS has monthly meetings in members' homes where they work on assigned poetic forms (including tankus, sonnets, sestinas, villanelles) and topics. Staten Island Writers Staten Island Zoo The SI Zoo is an 8-acre zoological park located in West Brighton. It is dedicated to the conservation of wild animals and their habitats. Provides professional opportunities for theater artists. Tottenville Historical Society The Tottenville Historical Society was founded in 2003. In June 2005, its charter was approved by the NYS Education Dept. The Society's primary goal is to document and preserve the culture and history of Tottenville and vicinity through the collection of artifacts. These artifacts include, but are not limited to, books, maps, photos, diaries, newspaper articles, oral history interviews, and other documents and records. Universal Temple of the Arts Universal Temple of the Arts was formed in 1967 by Maurice Phillips - Artist/Philosopher/Teacher - and a group of young artists who incorporated their talents for the purpose of quickening the creative spirit in the individual and fostering brotherly love through artistic, educational, cultural and civic activities. Presently we offer workshops and classes, geared for youth, in dance/drama, arts & crafts, basic homemaking, the social graces, sewing/designing, art appreciation, as well as homework assistance. Urban Park Rangers The Urban Park Rangers have been protecting the parks and educating the public about New York City's natural resources since 1979. Wagner College Academy of the Arts Provides classes and lessons for pre-college students in music (voice, all instruments, theory, sight-singing, electronic music), theater, fine arts and dance. Wagner College Gallery The Art Gallery displays the work of local and regional artists as well as art and photography by students and faculty. Wagner College Music Department Many concerts given throughout the year by the renowned Wagner Choir, the Concert Band, the Jazz Band, the Guitar and Lute Ensemble, as well as other ensembles and recitals by faculty and students. All events are free. Wagner College Theater Presents four productions (mainly musicals) on its main stage, other theatrical productions in its studio theater, Stage One, and an annual Dance concert. All events are open to the public. Wagner College Young Musicians Competition The Competition takes place each year. The Performance Competition is divided into two age levels: Pre High School (I) and High School (II). Categories are: bowed strings (violin, viola, cello); plucked strings (guitar, harp); woodwind (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon); brass (French horn, trumpet, trombone); keyboard (piano, harpsichord); voice. The Competition in Original Composition is limited to high school students. Entry deadline is normally late January. The Preliminary Competition in March offers First Place, Second Place, Third Place and Honorable Mention in each category. The Competition Finals take place in late May when the First Place Winners compete for the Grand Prize of $500 and a solo recital at Wagner the following semester.
