The ABC (Arts Bring Change) Grant
The ABC (Arts Bring Change) Grant program is a local arts-in-education funding program that is administered by the Council on the Arts and Humanities for Staten Island. This program is funded and supported by the Local Capacity Building (LCB) Initiative at the Arts-in-Education Program at the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).
The LCB Initiative is a statewide effort to provide local support for widespread participation in arts-in-education. To that end, COAHSI was invited by NYSCA to grant funding support for partnerships between schools and teaching artists and/or cultural organizations that focus on the interdisciplinary or integrated study of the arts and non-arts subjects. The applicant of record for this program will be the school and either an individual teaching artist and/or cultural organization. However, eligible projects will involve a direct collaboration between at least one classroom teacher and one teaching artist. Funding decisions are based on the criteria and funding priorities as they are outlined in these application materials.
ABC Grants are available to all public, private, parochial or charter schools, pre-K thru 12, located in Staten Island.

2007 ORIGINAL WORK GRANTEES
20 APPLICANTS/4
GRANTS OF $2,125 EACH TOTAL POOL: $8,500
Allan
Douglass Coleman, Literature
Coleman's Stapleton home was designed and built in 1910 by James McDermott, a
local architect, for his own family. Coleman will write a series of poems,
prose poems, and microfictions based on the experience of living in and
renovating the house, his involvement in the communities of the North Shore,
and on McDermott's life, integrating memorabilia that relate to these issues in
the text. The work will take the form of a printable image-text work, a
multimedia work for the internet, and a mixed-media live-performance version.
Bill
Murphy, Visual Art
The waterfront of Staten Island has a special place in Murphy's work. He has
been "chronicling" it since 1975, and thought he had exhausted all the
"boneyards" of abandoned ships. However, last spring he discovered the
waterfront of the 19th century industrial "Kreischerville" brick factory area,
where many abandoned barges, ferries, and other wooden vessels are currently
moored. His new project, "Eulogy for Kreischerville" will allow him to continue
building a body of work that reflects his depth of feeling.
Lissette
J. Norman, Literature
Lissette Norman is a full-time writer and she will support the rewrite phase of
her book project, Longer than the Sky, with this grant. Longer than the Sky,
geared towards young adults, depicts Dominican life and culture and contains a
strong message of hope. Readers will experience the main character's emotional
process of changing the fate of her family. Lissette has published work many
times in magazines and anthologies and is the author of a children's book.
Jon
Specter, Music
Specter has been a blues guitarist for 30 years, playing with many accomplished
blues legends and famous musicians. His new project involves adding
instrumentation and interpretations from other musicians to nine original love
songs. This collection will be titled "Blue Passion." Through group sessions in
a studio his original ideas for this collection of songs will be enhanced by
the input of other musicians, reflecting the backgrounds of the musicians
adding to the interpretations. The new music that is created in this atmosphere
will highlight Specter's growth and broaden his scope as a musician as well as
positively influencing those with whom he will work.
